ON THIS DAY: In 1898, author Erich Maria Remarque was born in Germany (he died in 1970). After serving in World War I, he published one of the most famous anti-war novels ever written. The 1930 film adaptation of the same title, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, which won the Oscar for Outstanding Production of 1929/30, remains a poignant requiem for the lost generation that fought the War to End All Wars. |
