ON THIS DAY: In 1999, NASA announced that the previous year, 1998, had been the hottest year on record, with an average global temperature of 58.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If this keeps up, we'll all have to learn to swim as polar ice melts and sea levels rise... which is perhaps the backstory of the events of 1995's WATERWORLD. Not as bad a film as you've heard, even for a Kevin Costner ego trip, it is a visually dazzling -- if not entirely gripping or plausible -- science fiction film the likes of which had never been seen before, and probably won't be seen again, as CGI replaces difficult real-world locations, like this film's entirely and actually ocean-bound production. |
