TONIGHT IS: Twelfth Night, the evening before the Epiphany, the date in Christian mythology on which the Three Wise Men visited the infant Jesus. Twelfth Night marked the end of medieval Christmas celebrations, and William Shakespeare invoked the bacchanalia of these festivities in his gender- bending mistaken- identity comedy of the same name... which may have actually been first performed on Twelfth Night, 1601. Director Trevor Nunn's 1996 TWELFTH NIGHT moves the action to the 1890s and features a delectable cast of Brits, including Helena Bonham Carter, Imogen Stubbs, Richard E. Grant, Ben Kingsley, and Mel Smith. |
