ON THIS DAY: In 1891, the game of basketball was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts, by James Naismith, a YMCA phys ed teacher, who wanted to create a sport that could be played indoors during the cold winter months. The wonderful 1994 documentary HOOP DREAMS, which follows the lives of two high-school NBA hopefuls, dramatically demonstrates the sometimes false hope that the game has offered inner-city kids with few prospects. |
