TODAY IS: April Fool's Day, or All Fool's Day, which probably began in France in 1564, when the first day of the calendar year switched from April 1 to January 1 -- the fools were the ones who celebrated the "old" New Year, and they became the butt of jokes and tricks. The most sublime Hollywood fools are, of course, the Marx Brothers, at perhaps their most foolish in 1933's DUCK SOUP, in which Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo wreak havoc in the tiny European nation of Freedonia. Hail, Freedonia!
